Boiling eggs

I've noticed that very few people boil eggs the same way. For hard boil, I put the eggs in cold water, bring to a boil, then put on low for 20 minutes. How do you do it?

Yesterday it dawned on me: I had not been to Lake Michigan all summer. We had been scheduled for a girls' weekend this weekend, which would have taken us there, but it was postponed due to a death in our hostess's family. So I hied myself over to Holland State Park, and got there just in time to see one of the big ships leave the harbor.

Big Weekend!

Haven't been around much this weekend. Saturday was the wedding of a friend's son. Today we celebrated my mother's 80th birthday (which is actually tomorrow but we could make a real occasion out of it today). The whole gang went to dinner: twenty-six of us ranging from ages 10 months to 79 years, 11 months, 29 days. What a trip!

Frannie in Pieces

How can you not be drawn in by a book that begins:

Do you know what it says on a tube of toothpate? In small print? you have to read the small print because they never tell you anything scary in large print. Large print is what they want you to see. Here's what the large print says: FOR BEST RESULTS, SQUEEZE TUBE FROM THE BOTTOM AND FLATTEN AS YOU GO UP. But the important stuff is small. Tiny. If more than used for brusing is accidentally swallowed, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center right away.

Now, if you've never read your toothpaste, you may not have seen this. It is there. Go ahead and check, if you wish.

The author is Delia Ephron, sister to Nora. She has created a lovely story of Frannie, who found her father dead one day. Frannie has much to deal with, but eventually the pieces begin to fit. It's a good read for teenagers, or for those who love teenagers.

Swing Vote!

I vote it a winner, though it opened disappointingly at the box office last week. Full disclosure: I am a Kevin Costner fan, albeit not as much of a one lately. However, this movie brings me right back into the fold. It's a lovely political morality tale in that it highlights the two major parties attempts to kowtow to various "demographics" instead of standing for beliefs. It also takes shots at those in the electorate that do not vote . . . while some have called the final speech in the movie sermonizing, I found it stirring.

Costner and Madeline Carroll, as his very together 12-year-old daughter, unflinchingly portray the intense relationship between children and alcoholic parents. Well done for both actors.

I really did enjoy this movie.

I stay at my mother's every other Friday night. We watch old movies and eat popcorn, and sometimes my brother Crits joins us. My nieces cleaned the playroom where I sleep the Thursday before I was last there. This note greeted me when I pulled back the bedspread.
